YYJ Sewists All-Day Sewing Retreat

Imagine… you and nine other fabulous sewists from the Victoria (YYJ) area, rent out a community hall and spend the day working on projects side-by-side! That’s what this Sewing Retreat is all about!
Ticket price is $40, which goes entirely to the rental of the space from 9am-5pm. This retreat is aimed at experienced sewists who are able to work independently on their projects. This is not a workshop or instructional time. You pick your own project and bring whatever you need for it. Feel free to ask for advice or fitting assistance, but you are responsible for your own decisions, your time management, and what you produce.
Our hall rental includes:
- Folding plastic tables and folding metal padded chairs
- A kitchen with fridge and basic food prep area for snacks/lunch
- Lots of natural light/windows
- Two washrooms
- Easy parking or bus line access (#14)
Bring your own:
- sewing machine/sergers (whatever you wish to use)
- sewing supplies & tools that you need – wisely labelled
- project (fabric & patterns)
- anything else sewing related you’ll want to have with you – though a field trip to a fabric store might spontaneously burst out!
- beverages, snacks, lunch
- press cloth / ironing protection suitable to your project
Your organizer (@Sue_in_victoria) will be arranging:
- three ironing stations (we can have one set low for synthetic fabrics, one mid-range, one high heat for linens/cottons, or figure out something else suitable for everyone’s projects)
- extension cords so everyone can have two plug-ins at their table
- unhealthy snacks
Just a few ground rules:
- Be scent-free and allergen-free – skip the peanuts. If there are other allergy concerns, please let me know in the form below and I’ll alert others.
- Be fully COVID-vaccinated and refrain from coming if you’re feeling ill. Your ticket price will be carried forward to the next retreat day (but you’re welcome to swap your spot to another sewist).
- Help keep the hall clean by not having spilly things at your station, and pitching in to help with cleanup at the end of the day.
- Be respectful of other people’s sewing time, aesthetic choices, sewing ability, etc. by not offering unsolicited advice and/or commentary.
Payment:
I have to pay up front for the rental so I’m asking for folks to send their ticket payment to hold their spot. To make payment, please send an Interac e-transfer to me (sue.c.low@gmail.com – no password required for deposits) with a note in the memo field to make sure I know who you are. Once I’ve got your payment and matched it to an RSVP, I will send an email confirming your spot.
Refunds?
If you cancel on the day of the event (or day before) due to illness, your ticket price will be carried forward to the next retreat day. You can also swap your spot with another sewist.
If you change your mind about coming or your life changes it for you, I need to make sure your seat is taken or paid for. I expect there to be lots of interest and potentially a waitlist for this so refunds shouldn’t be an issue. As soon as your spot is taken, I will send your money back.
However, if you cancel within 5 days of the event, chances are not good that I’ll be able to fill your spot. In that case, I will need to hold on to 50% of the ticket price ($20) unless/until someone jumps in and takes your spot.
